Another reason for a steak dinner tonight!
I know usually this forum discusses less than positive experiences with the public, which is why when I have a good experience or come across people who don't take liberties with my dog I try to shares those.
Took my guy to my son's little league game, since he loves to go to these games and crowd watch. So we were sitting under a tree enjoying the breeze when I made note that a family beside us had a child who was extremely stimulated by the crowd and situation: nothing bad but obviously autistic and becoming a handful for his mother.
Erik had been making friends (I lost count of how many hugs he got) and staying in a good platz most of the day so when I had my eyes on the game at one point I didn't worry too much when I felt the leash tug. I knew he was creeping but wasn't overly concerned since I knew who was around and figured he was rolling, stretching and enjoying the grass but in the next couple of minutes I realized that our area had gotten a little calmer. So I glanced down the leash and realized he's wriggled himself over to the autistic youngster and was laying beside him. The boy was mostly ignoring him but would reach over and squeeze the thick fur at his neck/shoulder and then go back to playing. I glanced quickly at the mother and lifted the leash, ready to bring Erik back to me but she had this desperate look in her eye and shook her head so I left him be.
And that was how we passed the remaining innings of the game. Erik didn't budge, no matter the chaos around him. His new friend played calmly and would reach over and squeeze his fur every so often and one time lay down across his shoulders, hugging him. This is much the way Erik has handled himself around a member of my family who is developmentally challenged but it was fascinating to see him do it with a complete stranger.
Towards the end of the game, the mother came over and thanked me for sharing my 'therapy' dog and asked me what agency I had gotten him from. I explained he wasn't a trained therapy dog but my sport dog and this was a 'day off' for him. She was very surprised and explained that her family was looking to get her child a therapy dog but had not yet found one who clicked. That they had worked with a couple agencies and of the dogs they'd met, they had not been introduced to a German Shepherd and she was going to talk to the people she was working with about possibly trying to find one since her son took so well to Erik.
To me, today he earned a steak for dinner, just like he gets after a successful trial! It always just feels good when we have a successful 'Ambassador for the Breed' interaction with the public.

R.I.P Smudge.. he made it to 19 Years old!
A few months ago I started a post for Smudge, at the time he was almost 19... Well sadly we had to let him go to kitty heaven today. This was not the way I wanted to spend Mothers Day with my mom!! He was my moms cat, FOR SURE...He followed her everywhere in the house, slept right under the covers with her every night...Although she has 2 other cats there is still that "empty" spot tonight.
Smudge was a awesome cat.... Loveing, very caring and yet fiesty up until the end. I am fairly sure, as well as the vet, that it was his kidneys that went. He lived a long and happy life... 19 isnt to bad in my book.
With a heavy heart and alot of tears we let him go..
R.I.P Smudge... We will miss you ole fiesty guy...
This is in March 2014...
This picture was taken March 2014 as well
...... and now some random pictures of him over the years....
Strange Requests by Pet Owners
Too funny!
Above and Beyond
As a profession, veterinary medicine is one in which we are used to going to great lengths to meet the needs of the families we serve. Being asked to make a house call, visit a sick patient outside in the owner’s car or stay past closing time are all quite common in our line of work.
Still, even in this business, while we strive to make pets and their people as happy as possible, there are some requests that strike us as a bit much. On my Facebook page, I asked veterinary professionals to tell me some of the most bizarre requests they’ve gotten from pet owners. Here’s what they reported.
- We had a client who wanted us to neuter her dog instead of spay her because it was cheaper.
- A client was boarding a dog at the clinic and requested that we keep a photo of the family in the kennel with the dog. And not only the photo, but a frame that you can record messages into. The family requested that we play the message at least six times a day.
- We once had a woman who wanted us to take a look at her duck because it "wasn't swimming." Her chicken was fine, but it sure wasn't a duck!
- We had a client claim that the reason her cat kept getting sick was because it was urinating on mothballs and that the urine added to the mothballs was making meth, so the cat was high.
- I had a client ask for a copy of my license so she could open up a veterinary account at a distributor to get “flea medicine.” She promised not to buy controlled drugs.
- I was asked if I could provide a list of veterinary medications that could be used by humans and if I could help procure these medications in case of a doomsday scenario. (This client is a "prepper.")
- We were asked to perform a private cremation for a cat's tail after he had a tail amputation. We did it, too!
- We had a client bring in a cat to be neutered. He asked if, prior to the surgery, we could place his cat in a kennel with a female cat for one final ... . Our sharp receptionist politely responded with, "I'm sorry, sir, but we no longer offer that service."
- We had a client insist we refer to her pet as "Mister" until he got to “know” us. He would then let us know when it was OK for us to use his given name.
- A pet owner asked for testicles from his dog back (after the dog was neutered) so he could keep them in a jar at his office. When his daughter was old enough to date, he planned to bring the boyfriend in the room and explain what happened to the last boyfriend who didn't treat her well.
- Umm, we've had more than one person lift a shirt to show us a rash.
- A client asked the male doctor to dress like a woman and wear a wig because the dog didn't like men.
- We had a client come in the other day for an exam, worried about the two large lumps on their "female" dog's underbelly. Turns out the dog was not a female after all!
- New clients requested that I cover the windows and turn out the lights when they arrived for their pets’ appointments — because they were vampires. (They ended up being wonderful pet owners.) New staff members thought I had lost my mind when I informed them of this client’s special needs.
- We had a client ask if she could hold her kid's birthday party in our hospital during work hours.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. See the complete list of more than 500 submissions on Dr. Andy Roark’s Facebook page.

FINALLY - Drew Bynum CONVICTED FELON!
On Mon, May 12, 2014, Me, Piper Allen, many Drew Bynum victims from Panama City and around the country entered the witness room awaiting the trial to begin. After 20 minutes of seeing the room full of us, Bynum entered a plea of GUILTY to 9 Felonies, 4 Misdemeanors to avoid the trial! VICTORY!!! It took almost a year, but prosecutors would not cut a deal for a reduced sentence. My heart goes out to the victims who never recovered the bodies of their dogs. It was a bittersweet victory for many and sentencing will be June 25 at Houston County Court House, Dothan, AL. Thanks to all who helped us reach a conviction.
Mentor gone - Puppies coming!
I'll spare everyone the story - long story short: our mentor is MIA and is no longer in the picture (due to ethical and moral issues I don't care to discuss).
We have several GSD's in our large family, have for years. All other previous litters were born at our partner's kennel (many stayed with us post 8 weeks for socialization and for placement). We have imported a new female (no, this wasn't random - it was a planned breeding) and we expect pups to be on the ground sometime next week hopefully.
Early ultrasound indicated a good 10 pups. We had our vet do an xray Saturday (day 51) and she saw at least 9 pups. There was quite a bit of stool on the xrays, she believes there may bemore hiding.
Today, she is ad day 55. Our sunroom is her own private room, with a whelping box. I noticed last night when I went in, that she has begun nesting a bit. Question: I've read on more than one occassion that this indicates we should begin with temp taking (our "mentor" never took temps, among other things we're discovering), and that birth could be a few days to a week away. My question: what is everyone's experiene with nesting?
And before any nasties make an entrance ;) or mud slinging begins... no, we're NOT byb'ers. We have high standards, have done our homework (and still do - many long time breeders have said that you never stop learning), and have a passion for this breed and continuing and improving upon the integrity of the breed. Dogs should never be bred just to turn a litter and possibly make a dollar. With thousands upon thousands of dollars spent, more time than I could count, money isn't our motivator. So... poor choice in mentor? Yup. No need to even go there at this point. Acknowledged, agreed, and moving on. Would appreciate any imput or what I would expect to happen as we quickly approach week 9.
Thanks,
~t
